    Sharp vs. Ball Point
Needles fall into two primary categories — ball point and sharp. It is important to use the correct needle. Ball point needles are designed to avoid making holes in knit or loosely woven materials. The cross fibers which constitute the knit or loosely woven materials are relatively far apart as compared to those in tightly woven materials. If a knit strand of thread is cut with a sharp needle, it produces a hole that will enlarge when the loose fibers pull back from the cut. To prevent this, the ball point needle is designed to push aside the individual strands of the knit. This assumes that the ball point needle point is in good condition. Sharp needles are designed for woven fabrics. Because of the tightness of the weave, individual cut fibers will not pull away and make holes. For this exact reason it is important not to use ball point needles on wovens. The blunt force of a ball point will tear through the fibers and actually pull them in the process, resulting in uneven, irregular embroidery and damage to the fabric. Sharp needles can be used on all wovens as well as dense fabrics such as leather, vinyl, canvas, etc.
    Titanium vs. Chrome
Non-titanium needles have a chromium (“chrome”) finish.  Titanium (or PD) needles have a titanium-nitride ceramic finish which makes them more wear-resistant than any other needles. When embroidering large stitch patterns or penetrating very abrasive, dense or tough materials, the needle point and surface will maintain its original shape and dimensions 3 to 5 times longer. Titanium (PD) needle points will not wear down as fast as chrome plated needle points. The use of Titanium (PD) needles gives you longer needle life, fewer defects due to “dulled” needle points, and increased productivity.
ADDITIONAL DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH NEEDLE TYPE:
    15X1: HAX1, 130/705H, SY2020, SY2031, 206X15, PFX130, CANU 22:15 (Standard – Regular Sharp
    and Ball Point)
    This is the
    Standard
needle with a flat shank and a regular size eye for most home sewing machines and home sewer based embroidery and quilting machines. It has one groove and a regular scarf. It is available in many sizes with a sharp or a ball point and a chrome or Titanium (PD) finish. NOTE: The Titanium finish (PD) lasts up to 5 times longer than the standard chrome finish.
    15X1SP: HAX1SP, 15X1KN, HAX1KN, 130/705H-S (Stretch/Elastic Fabrics – Regular Sharp and Ball Point)
This is a special version of the 15X1 for
    Stretch
    or
    Elastic
    materials or tightly woven
    Knits
. It is made to higher standards, it has a “snake’s head” shape due to a combination of a slightly bulged eye and a slightly reduced blade above the eye. The bulged eye opens a slightly larger space in the material and the thinner blade above the eye reduces contact between the material. This reduces friction and needle heat-up and prevents skipped stitches.
It is available with a sharp or a ball point and a chrome or Titanium (PD) finish.
15X1ST: HAX1ST, 130/705H-E (Embroidery and Decorative Stitching – Regular Sharp and Ball Point)
This is a special version of the 15X1 for
    Embroidery
    and
    Decorative Stitching
. It is made to higher standards for smoother sewing. It has an over-sized eye to reduce the stress and tension on delicate embroidery thread. It also accommodates metallic threads and makes needle threading easier. It is available with a sharp or a ball point and a chrome or Titanium (PD) finish.
    HAX130Spi: 130/705H-M (Microtex)
    This special needle was designed
with a more acute (slimmer, sharper) point to reduce
penetration resistance. It can be used on Micro-Fiber materials, tightly woven fabrics and synthetic leathers. The slimmer, sharper point allows this needle to penetrate hard fabrics smoothly.
    HAx130N: 130N (Top-Stitch and Deco-stitch)
This special needle has a very long,
almost double length, eye. It is made for Top-Stitching or
Decorative stitching and will accept heavy or multiple
threads. It can also be used for embroidery with heavy,
metallic threads . It is available in chrome or Titanium (PD) finish.
